Living With Pets in an Apartment
By: J.Morgan
Living in an apartment with pets can present certain complications as well as a few challenges so you’d be well advised to do a little research. Of course many people love their animals dearly and in essence, their pet or pets are as much part of the family as any other family member. When one considers just how much enjoyment one can get out of owning a pet, it’s hard to perceive how some people fail to care for their pets properly.
The general procedure regarding pets in an apartment is for the owner of the pet to pay a pet deposit up front to cover any possible damages. However, one should still make the effort to determine if there are any other specific rules or regulations regarding keeping your pet in an apartment. Also, in the event that your pet does cause damage, you will be liable for all costs if the damage is more than the deposit you pay.
Furthermore, one should contact the local authorities in the area to determine what the relevant regulations are for that area. Such regulations could include a limit on the number of cats or dogs one may own and there may even be a regulation which requires owners to keep their dogs on a lead at all times when in a public space.
If you are going to be renting an apartment, the lease agreement should clearly state what the regulations are regarding the keeping of pets. One other aspect you should be aware of, is that depending on the landlord, you may be required to maintain your pet according to their policies such as regular grooming and being able to produce proof of all vaccinations.
Of course, while we’ve covered the need of landlords and local authorities, we also need to take our pets into consideration. We need to ask ourselves if our pet will have adequate space and whether or not we’ll be able to provide exercise opportunities according to what pet we have. Likewise, if you’ll be at work all day, is your pet capable of being left alone inside an apartment. This is especially important if you have a dog because the last thing neighbours will want is a dog barking incessantly all day long while you’re out.
Dog owners really need to be sure that there are opportunities for walking there dogs as often as required. Of course, depending on what breed you have, you’ll also need to ensure your dog can move around the apartment comfortably. Cats on the other hand don’t require as much space but they do require amusement in the form of toys, objects to climb on and of course, to scratch. Over and above these basic requirements, you should also inspect access routes to and from your apartment to ensure it is dog proof and that you will not be putting the dog’s life in danger.
Perhaps the most important safety aspect of all is ensuring that any balcony the apartment may have, is secure and that it poses no risk to your pet. One should take into consideration that a dog left alone may well attempt to jump over balcony rails, not to mention the possibility of them slipping through any openings. While cats are far less likely to fall from a balcony, you should still take precautionary measures just in case. Having your pet live with you in an apartment is great but please abide by the rules and be sure to provide for your pet’s needs.
